There were as many conversations going on as there were people. The voice of some was muffled, while the words of some sounded like glass pins piercing Dhriti's ears. Every tongue was standing her in the dock. Without hearing her side of the story, she was being held guilty, and without any fault, a stain had been put on her character that would never be erased.
Dhriti was silently bearing the questions and fingers raised against her. Perhaps now she didn't think it was important to give any explanation, to present her side to them, or to prove her innocence; she didn't think it was worth it. And why should she, when her own mother didn't listen to her, didn't know the truth before condemning her, and punished her without any crime? She silently accepted all the accusations laid against her.
Dhriti looked at the closed doors of that house for a while with teary eyes, where she was born and grew up. Then she stood up and wiped her tears with her palms. As she turned around, the rest of the people looked at her with hatred-filled eyes and turned their faces away. Dhriti lowered her gaze and walked away from there, hearing their bitter words, her eyes downcast.
When she reached the car, the driver was standing outside. Dhriti had composed herself by then. She wasn't allowed to be weak.
Dhriti got into the car and told the driver the address of the boutique. After about half an hour, Dhriti arrived at the boutique. She had left without informing anyone the day before, and so many incidents had happened to her since then that she didn't have her senses; how could she inform them? Dhriti knew she would have to face some humiliation here too because of her actions the day before, and she had mentally prepared herself for it.
As she was about to go inside, the other boys and girls working there looked at her with strange eyes. Dhriti was moving towards her workspace when the old uncle who did the peon work came to her, bowed his head, and said, "The boss wants to see you."
Dhriti knew this was bound to happen. She took a deep breath and walked towards the owner's cabin.
"May I come in, sir?"
Dhriti asked hesitantly, standing at the cabin door. The man sitting on the chair looked at her with strange eyes, nodded his head, and said, "Yes, come in."
Dhriti entered and stood before him, saying, "Sir, you called me?"
"Yes," the man replied and took an envelope out of the drawer. He put it on the table in front of Dhriti and said, "This is your salary till day before yesterday. You don't need to come here again. I've hired someone else for your position."
The words of Dhriti's boss left her speechless. Her eyes widened, and she looked at him with astonished eyes, questioning, "Sir, why are you saying this? Did I leave any shortcomings in my work?"
The man replied carelessly and angrily, "No, there were no shortcomings in your work, but there are shortcomings in you, your behavior, and your character. I hired you because of your talent, but your behavior made me regret my decision. Your carelessness caused me a loss of thousands. Two days ago, you left your work unfinished without informing anyone, not a call, not a message. You ignored office calls completely. Because of you, we suffered a loss of money, and our reputation was damaged in front of our regular customers. There is no place for a girl like you, who is irresponsible and careless. So take this and leave here."
The boss finished his statement, gesturing towards the envelope. His words made Dhriti, who was already sad, tearful. She composed herself and tried to explain her innocence, "Sir, I'm not careless. I had to go because of a personal emergency. I know I made a mistake this time, but I never gave you a reason to complain before. I promise I won't make any mistakes in the future. Just forgive me for this one mistake."
The boss's expression didn't change; he replied in the same careless tone, "There's no forgiveness for your mistake. I've already hired someone else, so you can't work here. Your begging or saying anything else won't change anything. I'm telling you with respect to take your earnings and leave. If you don't listen, I'll have to call the guard and have you thrown out in front of everyone. It would be better for you to take your money and find another job because you can't work here."
The boss had made his decision. Once again, because of Arnav, Dhriti was humiliated. First, her happiness and existence were taken away from her, and now her work, her dream, and the goal of her life were snatched away. Today, she was in a state where she was solely responsible for Arnav. Her anger towards him increased.
Dhriti bowed her head, took the envelope, and left silently.
As she exited the cabin, the man let out a deep sigh and dialed a number. The call was answered on the first ring.
"Is the work done?" a voice on the other end asked, and Dhriti replied in a low tone, "Yes, sir. I did exactly what you said. Dhriti was humiliated and thrown out of here. Now you won't cause any harm to my boutique, will you?"
"No, now you and your boutique are completely safe. Just make sure Dhriti doesn't show her face there again."
As soon as Dhriti's boss hung up, Arnav, who had planned all this, sat back in his chair like a king, a victorious smile spreading across his lips. He rested his head on the chair and, with a wicked smile, said to himself,
"This is just the beginning of your destruction, Miss Dhriti Avasti. Just watch what happens next and how I'll make your life difficult."
Arnav started laughing maniacally, recalling Dhriti's sad and dejected face.
On the other side, Dhriti sat in a nearby park, lost in thoughts about her life. Things were going well for her until Arnav had entered her life like a storm, scattering everything and leaving her with nothing. When would this storm subside, and when would her life get back on track? When would this punishment end, which she didn't even know she deserved?
As she sat there, evening turned into night, but Dhriti didn't move an inch. The driver had come to call her several times, but she refused to go. It was almost eight at night. Dhriti still sat on the bench in the park, staring into space. The park was empty now, but Dhriti sat alone.
The driver came once more to call Dhriti, but she refused to go. He called Arnav directly and informed him. Dhriti sat there, immersed in her thoughts, sad, dejected, and hopeless, as if she wanted freedom from the burden of this life.
Minutes passed, and some stray boys arrived. They were all drunk. Seeing a girl sitting alone in the deserted park, they started whispering among themselves. Their eyes filled with lust, and they approached Dhriti.
Dhriti was oblivious to the danger that was approaching. She was sitting silently, lost in her thoughts. Just then, she felt someone's touch on her palm, as if someone was comforting her. Dhriti was startled, came out of her reverie, and looked around. A boy was sitting beside her, smiling at her strangely. His teeth were yellow and black, and his eyes were red from intoxication. Dhriti was frightened and quickly brushed off his hand, standing up.
The boys' conversation and tone made Dhriti sense danger. When she saw herself surrounded by drunken boys, her throat dried up with fear. She understood that staying there for a moment was risky, and facing so many boys alone would be foolish. After considering all possibilities, she thought the best option was to run away and save herself from becoming a victim of these stray boys' lust.
The boys who had been smiling at her while seeing her alone now had stern expressions. They chased after her, not wanting to let her go.
"Hey, Chamiya, where are you running off to? Come here and let's enjoy the night."
The boys shouted as they chased her, trying to stop her.
As Dhriti ran, her sandals broke, leaving her barefoot. The pain and bleeding didn't stop her; she kept running. One of the boys almost caught up to her, grabbed her dupatta, but Dhriti didn't stop. She ran with all her might, and they surrounded her, trying to prevent her from leaving the park.
The stones and pebbles pierced her feet, causing her to bleed and hurt, but Dhriti didn't let her steps falter. She had to save herself from these beasts.
As she ran, her foot twisted, and she fell forward. Before she could fall, someone grabbed her arm and pulled her back. Dhriti collided with the person's broad chest. Her breath was coming in short gasps. The person wrapped his arms around her waist, holding her tightly. Dhriti struggled to get out of his embrace, shouting,
"Let me go! Release me! I said let me go, or I'll kill everyone!"
